Welcome back
Greg Rohde has returned to service in the Archdiocese of St. Louis as director of parish social ministry for Catholic Charities of St. Louis. Rohde had been director of lay ministry for the Diocese of Belleville, Ill., since 2003. Before that he was director of the archdiocesan Offices of Young Adult Ministry and Youth Ministry. Rohde has been a member of St. Margaret of Scotland Parish in South St. Louis since 1987. In 2007 he earned the National Tribute Award from the National Association for Lay Ministry, given annually to one person throughout the country for demonstrating a longterm commitment to the development of lay ministry.
Good Scout
Michael Kohne of Boy Scout Troop 419 in Arnold has earned the rank of Eagle Scout by building a retaining wall around an outdoor classroom at Holy Child School in Arnold and making improvements on the garden. Michael, who was assisted by fellow Scouts and school mates, is the son of Kevin and Mary Kohne of St. David Parish in Arnold. A 2008 graduate of St. Pius X High School in Festus, Michael received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and began Cadet Basic Training there on June 30.

Successful operation
Operation Rice Bowl, the national Catholic Relief Services collection taken up during Lent, raised $74,468 in the St. Louis Archdiocese. Of that, 75 percent will be sent to Catholic Relief Services, and 25 percent, or $18,000, will remain in the archdiocese to help people in need locally. The 2008 collection raised more than $18,000 over last year’s Rice Bowl collection in the St. Louis Archdiocese.
New faces
The archdiocesan Catholic Education Office has two new members. Robert Oliveri is the new associate superintendent for secondary education. Oliveri, a former assistant superintendent for the Ladue School District, replaces Father Mitchell Doyen, recently appointed president of St. Mary’s High School, the archdiocesan high school for boys in South St. Louis. Ken Lederle, former teacher of vocal and instrumental music at Bishop DuBourg High School in South St. Louis, is the new archdiocesan director of fine arts. He replaces Sister Pat Giljum, who retired from the position after 33 years to serve on the provincial leadership team of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.
Ignatian spirituality
The National Ignatian Spirituality Conference will be held Thursday-Sunday, July 24-27, at St. Louis University in Midtown St. Louis. The theme of the event is "Ignatian Passion: The Challenge of the Cross in the 21st Century." More than 500 people are expected to attend. The conference will include 30 workshops, including keynote presentations on "Christ’s Passion in the Spiritual Exercises." Dignity of Women
More than 100 people turned out for the June 28 Day of Recollection on the Dignity of Women presented by Women for Faith and Family at the Cardinal Rigali Center in Shrewsbury. Bishop Robert Hermann conducted the event, which included talks, Mass and other liturgies. The main events of the day of recollection were recorded and are available on a set of three CDs. Well done
St. Patrick’s Irish Open, held May 31-June 2, raised more than $750,000 for St. Patrick Center, the Catholic Charities agency that fights homelessness. Our Little Hoedown, the recent benefit for Our Little Haven, raised $95,000 to help abused, neglected, drug exposed and special needs children.
Novena to St. Ann
The annual novena to St. Ann will be held from Friday, July 18, through Saturday, July 26, at Visitation/St. Ann Shrine, 4515 Evans Ave. in North St. Louis. The annual trivia night to benefit Cardinal Glennon College Seminary will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2. Congratulations
Ashley Politte of Good Shepherd School in Hillsboro won the regional Knights of Columbus essay contest. Her essay, "Qualities I Look for in a Friend," has been sent on to the state competition.
Rachel Weich, a student at Barat Academy in Dardenne Prairie, was selected to attend the summer development camp for the U.S. National Hockey Team in Rochester, N.Y. Rachel was part of the Barat ice hockey team that went 22-0-1 in the 2007-2008 school year, Barat’s first year.
Car raffle
A 2006 Pontiac Solstice convertible will be raffled off to benefit Queen of Peace Center, a Catholic Charities agency that provide behavioral health care to addicted women and their children. Tickets are $50 each and only 500 tickets will be sold. The drawing will be held during the Queen of Peace Center golf tournament on Monday, July 21, at Norwood Hills Country Club. Journeying home
Catholic evangelist Richard Lane, founder of Qorban Ministries in St. Louis and a member of St. Alphonsus Liguori "Rock Church" Parish, will be a guest on EWTN’s "The Journey Home" with Marcus Grodi, airing Monday July 28, at 7 p.m. "The Journey Home" profiles converts to the Catholic faith. Lane coordinated the Catholic Men’s Conference in St. Louis in March.
